Smaller budget projects can have a large impact on your home: Part 3
Even if your home is in excellent condition, it’s still a good idea to give some thought to small scale projects that can have a big impact if you wish to sell some day. In Part 3 of our ideas for remodeling in Bay Village or other suburbs in Northeast Ohio, here are some more suggestions that will help increase your home’s value.
Murphy bed with adjacent shelving
If your home is more on the cozy side and its rooms are not large, a Murphy bed—perhaps with adjacent shelving and cupboards can open a spare bedroom, family room or den—can offer more storage space in a well-organized design.
One of the keys to visualizing how a Murphy bed will look is to understand that you will not be cutting a hole into a wall, but building on top of the existing wall. That way, shelving may be built to neatly align with the Murphy bed when it is upright or pulled to the open position, giving a clean look. Murphy beds are usually available in several sizes, including queen. Single beds are also available that are sideways-mounted, and these often may be a solution for a guest bed in a family room or other area.
The underside is often given a paneled finish, or one with faux drawers and cabinets, so that it blends in with the room.
A deep bathtub
For all those who enjoy soaking in a bathtub rather than standing in a shower, a deep tub can make all the difference for a relaxing bath.
Deep tubs are available in 17-inch depths, and some go as deep as 22 inches with dual armrests and will fit in smaller bathrooms designed for 5-foot long tubs.
The extra depth allows for water to cover the entire body, compared to traditional tubs, which are about 14-15 inches deep. Keep in mind that you may need to install a larger hot water tank since a deep bathtub needs more water to fill.
Blind kitchen corner cabinet
There are few bigger kitchen cabinet storage problems than with a blind corner, where part of one cabinet is hidden by the adjoining cabinet and you cannot see the inside the of the cabinet portion that is hidden. It is also rather difficult to use the space since it is not easily accessed.
Some solutions include a lazy Susan cabinet or a sliding shelf configuration. The optimum time to install a blind corner cabinet is during new construction, but certain models can be retrofit as well. There are many times of sliding shelf configurations, some using wire baskets and others using wooden trays. The more elaborate models are more costly but can offer some of the best solutions to the storage challenge.
Painting exposed basement ceiling
If you like an industrial look to your basement and don’t want to lose ceiling height that a drop ceiling would require, consider painting the ceiling and rafters black. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is by a paint sprayer.
This is an important first step to take if you are remodeling your basement, although with care, it can be done around existing fixtures and furniture. You may want to consider additional lighting, including spot lights, after the paint job is finished to offset the black ceiling, which will absorb light.
Light gray walls and a dark gray carpet are often used to add a complementary look to the space.
Toe kick vacuum in kitchen
If you’re tired of sweeping dirt into a dustpan and spilling it over the kitchen floor, one solution is a small vacuum machine mounted into a kitchen island or base cabinet. Manufacturers such as VacPort, Sweepovac or Dirt Devil offer a convenient way to vacuum up dirt you sweep to the collection spot. By touching the toe switch, the vacuum machine collects up the dirt.
It’s a convenient method to get rid of dirt, which is drawn into a disposable bag.
