Basement remodeling in Rocky River: making over a finished space

Posted In: Construction in Avon, Ohio

Rocky River, Ohio, takes its name from the waterway that empties into Lake Erie and developed westward to become a suburban residential community that became a city in 1930.

The city grew, and it was in 1977 when ground was broken for Christensen Estates, the last of the largest pieces of property to be developed in Rocky River, with 104 home sites. The latest figures show that more than 20,000 people live in the city in some 10,000 housing units, with the median home value being $250,000.

Taking these facts, one doesn’t have to look far to see that Rocky River property owners enjoy keeping their housing stock in tip-top shape, often remodeling over the years. If you’ve been thinking about the subject, it makes sense to start styling up—beginning with a basement that might have a dated look.

If you want a more contemporary look or would like a full-blown makeover, first decide what the basement use will be. A bedroom for guests? An extra bathroom with a spa feeling? A wine cellar, perhaps? Or a home theater? How about a new and improved laundry room, partitioned off from the rest of the basement?

Maybe you’ve recently purchased a home and want to update the space. As you consider your project, keep in mind that if there is a previous remodeling, much of the electrical, HVAC and plumbing work has already been done. Your dream will become reality faster if you can utilize the existing water and drain lines and heating and cooling ductwork. Electrical lines easily can be added.

But don’t feel you are limited by what has been done. This is the time to be creative. Think of functionality for your basement remodeling in Rocky River, but be daring to try something different and unique.

A home wine cellar with wooden storage unit.

For the basement that has been finished and insulated as well, it is an ideal space for a wine cellar. But don’t think it is a simple task of installing a wine rack and a bar. Wine needs to be sheltered from temperature and humidity fluctuations, sunlight, and vibration sources such as washers and dryers. If you are a connoisseur, you will want to consider a wine cooling unit to best store your precious vino.

A wine cellar need not take up a sizable space. You can go large or small. Perhaps a corner or a former storage closet will suffice. A collection of 250 bottles usually can be stored in 30 square feet of space. Many popular designs offer options of an attractive wine cellar that fits in well with a living room or sitting room.

If you’re not into wine that much, perhaps a home theater to watch TV is a better fit for your basement—a veritable cinema in your own home, minus the crowds. Custom seating, a sound system and a lighting system make for an awesome experience.

It’s a good practice when designing a home theater, to avoid using a square room. The TV screen should be placed along with the speakers on one of the narrow walls so sound emanates from the speakers along the longer walls of the room. This makes for an optimum sound experience. Insulation for sound reverberation and heating and cooling is essential.

A basement home theater adds a whole new dimension for watching movies and TV.

Choose your materials with care. The most popular types of flooring range from carpet to laminate to tile so pick one that best suits your theme. Wall paneling adds a nice touch, but building codes call for a sheetrock backer, adding to the labor and expense. Once you have installed paneling, you probably won’t want to paint it in the future because you’ve spent money for wood, while drywall is less expensive and easy to repaint or cover with wallpaper.

Another trending project now is a basement bathroom spa. If there is a basement bathroom already in place, it makes it possible to connect to existing plumbing without major expense.

If insulation, ventilation and moisture issues have been addressed, it’s time to think about design and fixtures.

A bath, bidet and toilet make a basic home spa.

Showers are no longer a simple showerhead and faucet. Many have built-in seats, custom lighting, and multiple water sources, such as a hand-held sprayer and large overhead showerhead. Sound systems are also available. Walk-in showers are becoming more popular, including those with linear drains, which help reduce the incidence of mold and mildew and can handle plenty of water.
