Ideas for remodeling in Rocky River

Small projects can create a big effect for your home: Part 5

Your home is in top condition, but it’s a great idea to keep up with the times through small scale projects that can have a big impact. In Part 5 of our ideas for remodeling in Rocky River or other suburbs in Northeast Ohio, we offer more suggestions that will help keep your home’s value in prime position.

  1. New backsplash for kitchen
A kitchen backsplash is a focal point of the space and should complement the kitchen’s theme.

If your kitchen has that look of being old and dated, a new backsplash will brighten it up considerably. With the wide variety of styles and colors, the most difficult part may be choosing the look that will best complement the kitchen. Mosaic styles are popular, and some have metallic or glass tiles built in for accents. Border tiles are also available to add an accent touch.

Whether your kitchen’s color scheme and theme are contemporary or traditional, the backspace should coordinate with the overall look. Available patterns are endless, so check to see if your unique favorite is in stock from the supplier. With that in mind, it’s good to have a second choice backsplash in mind.

  1. Removing a wall to open space

Looking for an easy way to open your kitchen layout? Or to combine two bedrooms into one large one?

Removing a wall is often the answer. While the size of your home may be average or small, by taking out a wall your space will feel more open and airy. With the additional space in the kitchen, you could consider adding an island or peninsula. The extra counter space will be ideal for preparation of a large meal or party.

Taking out a bedroom wall opens the possibility of a master suite—with a bathroom off the bedroom. However, choose your project with care; a three-bedroom house may become a two-bedroom house, possibly reducing its resale value. Also, beware of weight-bearing walls. If these types of walls are removed, an overhead beam is usually needed for support.

  1. Hardwood floors: refinishing
Old, worn hardwood floors spring back to life when sanded and refinished.

If your home has hardwood flooring, over time it may become dull and scratched. But unlike engineered wood flooring, hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished 10 to 12 times in its lifetime. Engineered wood flooring can be sanded and finished only once or twice.

While buffing will take out scratches, sanding and refinishing can transform your floor completely, including a new color of stain.

Polyurethane is one of the most popular finishes and come in either matte or gloss types.

Sanding and refinishing floors is difficult to do yourself, so it is best to call in a professional.

  1. Repainting kitchen cabinets
Spray-painting cabinets does not involve aerosol cans, but a spray system that can reach all surfaces.

When your kitchen cabinets suit you well but you are considering an exciting new color for them, keep in mind the advantages of a professional. Professionals can help you decide between brush or spray painting. Both have pros and cons that you should consider. Spray painting often takes less time and offers more complete coverage. Brush painting involves less use of paint and preparation time is shorter than spray painting.

Since they are a focal point of the kitchen, cabinets deserve an exceptional finish. They also should be painted with special cabinet paint, which is harder than regular paint and puts up with the wear and tear from fingermarks, steam and heat.

  1. Adding an accessible door

To make your home more accessible, a stepless entrance leading to a back or side door is a great addition to be welcoming to guests and to allow you to age in place.

During the planning stages, consider making the doorway 36 inches wide for wheelchair or walker entrance.

This simple addition will increase the marketability of your home, making it a must see for buyers who want accessibility.
